Awards! Who doesn't like receiving an award? Objects that celebrate our successes and victories. Objects presented to us to say, you did a really phenomenal job. Objects you keep on your tv stands to show to your friends and family. Objects that represent your hard work. There is a lot of glory in winning an award, more so when you don't expect it.
That was me on the night of the Miss Teen Trinidad and Tobago pageant. Before the crowning, they announced the winners of the special prizes. I didn't have high hopes for this part of the show, as I felt like there were other girls who were more deserving. I just wanted the crown. Then they called my name for not one, but three special prizes. Miss Amity, Best Gown, and Best Swimwear. Imagine my surprise. I was ecstatic about the best gown award because my big sister designed it, so it meant something more. Although I am friendly, I felt like there were other girls whose personalities were way bigger than mine. Then there was swimwear. I looked great in my swimwear, but again, I felt like there were other girls who looked better. Either way, the honour I felt was immense.
That segment was over and we were now onto the main award of the night - crowning the winner. As I stood on stage, I could feel my heart beating outside of my chest. Horrible feeling. They announced the second runner-up and it wasn't me. That meant I was still in the running for the crown. Then they announced the first runner-up and it wasn't me. That meant that...whoa...I was the new Miss Teen Trinidad and Tobago. I was getting that trophy and being crowned. I would wear that tiara and sash and spend a year as Miss Teen Trinidad and Tobago fulfilling the duties the role required. I had my eyes on the prize, but I never expected to leave the venue that night with four awards, including the title of Miss Teen Trinidad and Tobago.
